Hollywood Reporter announced on Friday that a further addition to the franchise is en route.
While GG loves the wee beastie and some of the films it has given us, surely, like the Joker and arguably Doctor Who, it’s time for a rest? Ridley Scott is producing, which at least hopefully means he’s given up trying to kick the sorry carcass of Prometheus back to life. He’s got Fede Alvarez as director. Alvarez is mainly known for grue, so it’s clear where they’re taking this.
Look, I’ll be positive for a minute, for a second. They’re going with streaming only in order to get away with edgier stuff than the cinema.
Er… that’s it. That’s all I’ve got. Unpick that for a second. All it means is that it will be a lower budget. Big studios (especially Disney) run screaming from the prospect of a higher age-rated cinema release because it harms their bottom line. Shunting it onto streaming may make it more adult-oriented and interesting, but that doesn’t sound like what’s happening here…
Alvarez’s output so far is the remake of Evil Dead, which I confess I’ve still yet to see as all the reviews said it just upped the gore and removed the humour. After that? Don’t Breathe. Reviewed that here. Cough. More recently he wrote the much-maligned new version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix. In which a 70-year-old dismembers people with a chainsaw. Again, more gore (the original has about a teaspoonful of blood).
I hope he makes me eat my words, but this doesn’t look good. And the fact that Disney is using it to pimp their streaming services again also makes me grumble. Really feels like that 4k release of Aliens is becoming less likely.
